Snap to Start Shipping Spectacles 3 in Fall

Snap (SNAP) is rolling out the latest version of its photo and video-taking sunglasses product, Spectacles 3, as the parent of picture-sharing app Snapchat deepens its offerings amid gains in active users.

The glasses have two cameras “designed to capture the world in 3D,” Snap said in a statement on Tuesday. They will begin shipping in the fall and are on pre-order sale for $380.

“Spectacles 3 capture depth and dimension the way our eyes do,” the company said. “This new ability provides a rich 3D canvas for self-expression and a suite of new 3D Effects on Snapchat.”

The Santa Monica, Calif.-based company has been introducing new products to keep users involved in its app, and said daily active users reached 203 million in the second quarter from 190 million in the first three months of the year.

Snap introduced a games feature in the second quarter and rolled out augmented reality lenses that modify appearances in real time. It has also made improvements to its app on Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Android operating system that helped push user growth.

Still, in 2017, Snap reported a Spectacles-related charge of $39.9 million from “excess inventory reserves and inventory purchase commitment cancellation charges” in the third quarter of that year. “These charges are non-recurring and not reflective of underlying trends in our business,” the company said at the time.
